The tour will take you from the 19th-century windmill to the large horticultural greenhouse, both of which bear witness to the reconstruction of the vineyard following the phylloxera crisis, spearheaded by Count Charles Nau de Maupassant. You will discover how this viticulture enthusiast transformed Clermont into a veritable experimental laboratory, whose vines and innovations contributed to the revival of the Nantes vineyards.
The walk will continue through the historic gardens, the cedar-lined avenue, the old orchards and the dovecote, before reaching the viewpoint overlooking the Loire Valley. This vantage point will provide an opportunity to discuss the architecture of the château, built during the regency of Anne of Austria, the sketches made by the painter William Turner during his journey along the Loire in 1826, as well as several significant episodes in local history.
The tour will conclude with an exceptional panoramic view of the Loire, Oudon and Champtoceaux, providing an opportunity to discuss the Wars of the Vendée, the river’s evolution and the ecological richness of the Loire’s hillsides.
Please note: the tour allows you to explore the historic grounds and admire the château’s exterior façades. The château and the main courtyard are not open to visitors, as they form part of a private residential property.
