This year, La Compagnie Les Mauvaises Gens is taking on the giant of English theatre: Shakespeare!
The challenge: to adapt one of Shakespeare’s earliest comedies with their characteristic humour and sensitivity:
Love’s Labour’s Lost!
Fourteen characters played by four actors – a plot impossible to summarise in a single sentence – four princes have vowed never to fall in love so they can devote three years of their lives to philosophy, when suddenly four princesses arrive to claim the lands they have inherited, but – knowing they will be facing princes who have vowed celibacy – decide to bet on the princes’ ability to keep their vow, whilst a boor and a braggart squabble over the love of a peasant girl who is off-limits to them, because beggars and soldiers, too, must resign themselves to putting their love lives on hold.
The key takeaway is that there’s love everywhere!
A complex plot, yet crystal clear to the actors and actresses, who will do everything in their power to bring it all to life and make it clear to you!
A veritable sporting spectacle, where the performers act as if they were on a playing field: shirts, a whistle, a referee, relays, team changes, men playing women and women playing men – it all happens so fast that you’re no longer quite sure who’s who.
A comedy brimming with misunderstandings, secret love stories and sharp-witted wordplay; theatre as a burst of life – indeed, of many lives – for, as Shakespeare said:
‘All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players. And in our time we play many parts.’
