Director Hugues Duchêne, who excels at creating politically committed theatre, has adapted Bertrand Guillot's historical novel L'Abolition des privilèges. A virtuoso solo that takes the audience to the heart of the Estates General of 1789.
We are plunged into a State in chronic deficit, where the richest escape taxation. The regime, out of breath, is on the brink of collapse. The people, at their wit's end, are demanding justice but see nothing coming. Such was France in the summer of 1789. Until the Night of 4 August in Versailles, when everything changes. Performed as close as possible to the audience, in a quadrifrontal space, by actor Maxime Pambet, who plays a dozen characters, The Abolition of Privileges is a veritable theatrical sprint, giving the feeling that history has suddenly accelerated. Recounting the few days that decided the fate of France, this show offers a formidable lesson in politics.
