Organised on the initiative of the Ministry of Culture, the 43rd edition of the European Heritage Days will take place this year on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September 2026, with two themes in the spotlight: ‘Photographic Heritage’ and ‘Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine’.
Discover the history of the Church of Saint-Symphorien in Montjean-sur-Loire. It was built between 1958 and 1864 according to plans by the architect Alfred-Edouard Heulin, who died one year after its inauguration. Built in the Neo-Gothic style, the church was originally intended to feature a 50-metre spire. However, the ground at Montjean did not provide the necessary stability for this project, which was subsequently abandoned. The vault is supported by 18 monolithic columns made of pink granite from Saint-Macaire-en-Mauges. Its chancel is lit by three large stained-glass windows, each featuring 18 quatrefoil medallions depicting the life of Christ, the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph.
