Ciné Club – Le Sorgho Rouge de Zhang Yimou

In the early 1930s, in a village in northeast China. In exchange for a donkey, the young Jiu Er is promised to an old leper who owns a farm. During the journey by palanquin, the young woman is the victim of an attempted kidnapping, but is saved by Yu Zhanao, one of the porters. After her husband?s death, Jiu Er, who has taken over the farm and sorghum distillery, marries Yu and has a son. When war breaks out, Japanese troops invade the village, burning the crops and torturing the inhabitants?
