CHAPELLE DES URSULINES (CHAPELLE)

The Ursuline Chapel (or St Joseph’s Chapel) is a chapel attached to the Ursuline Convent.

The chapel and the convent were built when the Ursulines arrived in Saint-Géréon in 1642. The convent was subsequently used as a hospital, a fodder store and then a military barracks (the Rohan Barracks). These numerous changes took their toll on the buildings. The chapel, which lay in ruins with only two sections of wall remaining, was one of the final restoration projects for the former convent. The buildings were purchased by Ancenis Town Council following the military’s departure in 1995.
The chapel (and the remaining parts of the convent) were listed as historic monuments in 1990.

The Ursuline Chapel serves a dual purpose: hosting professional exhibitions and a number of cultural events (performances, concerts, etc.). For each exhibition, activities related to the theme explored by the artist are organised: talks, cultural events, etc. Similarly, guided tours are organised for schoolchildren from the Pays d’Ancenis region to raise their awareness of art.
