During the Revolution, like many neighbouring communes, Saint-Laurent-des-Autels was subjected to the “infernal columns” on 16 and 17 March 1794. Tragically, 230 people were killed and buried in several mass graves.
The Martyrs’ Chapel was built on one of these graves, a kilometre from the town, in 1878, and was blessed by Bishop Freppel of Angers on 2 June 1879.
The building was restored in 2014-2015 with the support of the Fondation du Patrimoine.
The chapel is open to the public. Inside, you will find a number of historical explanations, including a soundtrack, old photographs and explanatory panels.
Guided tours of the chapel are available (on request) with volunteers from the association “Les amis de la chapelle des Martyrs”.Visiting languages:French
