The small fortified village of St-Dye-sur-Loire (950 inhabitants) is without any doubt one of the most charming villages on the banks of the Loire. It has conserved its rich heritage of active port (the materials used to construct Chambord arrived here), its 15th, 16th, and 17th century houses, as well as a large portion of its fortifications: eight round towers (out of fifteen), and the ramparts which defended yesteryear the town, and the rectangular enclosed area with its four entries (towards Blois, Orleans, Chambord, and the Loire). All year round, free access any time.
