Different varieties of trees and flowers As soon as you enter the park (via avenue Foch), a recently refurbished avenue of palm trees and ornamental flowers invites you to contemplate and relax. On the left, a former blockhouse is covered in greenery. This first part of the park is mainly planted with deciduous trees, but there are also some special trees such as the Chilean Araucaria and the Ginkgo Biloba (known for its medicinal properties). The park is bordered by a number of private properties, some of which were built on blockhouses. On the seafront, the vegetation is different, giving way to pines and holm oaks. Route Seven panels are located along the pathway, giving an account of the site’s history and, more specifically, its military heritage, which has been known since the 18th century with the establishment of a customs guardhouse, followed by the installation of coastal batteries, protective casemates for artillerymen, a large underground shop and barracks at the end of the 19th century. It was then occupied by the German army during the Second World War, and became a base for the fortress of Saint-Nazaire, which was liberated in May 1945.
