In the 10th century, the village of Saint-Géréon had a monastery on the site of the quarry. It was destroyed in 1000 and became a Benedictine priory around 1100. The granite piers of the entrance porch and the tower door in the wall between the church and the bakery still remain. The priory was destroyed well after the Revolution and the quarry was not opened until much later.
Today, the Etang du Gotha is an open fishing lake. The surrounding area has been landscaped with bowling greens and a playground, making it a great place to spend a day with family and friends.
