LE PONT DE MESSAN

The Chaussée what? The “Chaussée le Rais”, the “Chaussée le Roy” or the “Chaussée le Retz”… Its spelling has changed over time. This causeway supported the ancient Roman road from Nantes to Saint-Père-en-Retz. We can imagine that this earthen embankment was used as a passageway and then as a road, later becoming a Roman road. It was very useful for holding back the floodwaters from the Grand-lieu lake, thus protecting the Buzay marshes.
