Timber from the forest was floated down the river, and bargemen used flat-bottomed boats (gabares, toue, toue cabané) to transport the stones extracted from the village?s open-air quarries. These blocks of fine, golden limestone, ideal for sculpting, were used to build all the houses in the village, as well as many famous buildings (Orléans cathedral, Saint Benoit sur Loire abbey, the double staircase at Chambord, Blois château, etc.). This house, like many others in the village, was regularly submerged by the rising waters of the Allier. The marks of the so-called centennial floods (1790, 1835, 1856, 1866 the highest, 1875) engraved in the stone of this house and many others in the village bear witness to the level of these floods
