Amid the abundance of French miniatures, the Jeux d’enfants, Petite Suite, Dolly and Ma mère l’Oye cycles have a place of their own: these 4-hand collections have become some of the most famous works by their respective composers. This is evidenced by the profusion of arrangements for each of them, from opulent orchestration to arrangements for just a few instruments. What links these four notebooks, to which we can add Louis Aubert’s Feuille d’Images, is the genius of their composer. Can these collections really be described as children’s music?
