Today, almost everyone is familiar with Leonardo da Vinci?s Mona Lisa. But it wasn’t always so. For a long time, it was the Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan that was the master?s most famous and appreciated work. Prior to the 19th century, the Florentine?s works were rarely translated into engraving. Curiously, Leonardo showed little interest in this technique, which makes it possible to reproduce images and, by extension, distribute them on a large scale. Surprisingly, other artists of the time used engraving to promote their artistic creations. Unravelling the mystery behind this astonishing observation is one of the aims of this exhibition, which will present visitors with some thirty works.
