The Etang du Sol de Loire in Montjean-sur-Loire is a former sand extraction site that has been converted into an exceptional fishing lake, managed by the AAPPMA L’Ablette Montjeannaise in partnership with the Maine-et-Loire Fishing Federation (FD49). This 22-hectare former sand pit, now classified as a Sensitive Natural Area (ENS) and part of the Natura 2000 network, is home to remarkable biodiversity.
Accessible to all, the site offers fishing spots for carp and carnivorous fish (pike, pike-perch, perch). Maps are available from the Montjean Tourist Office or on cartedepeche.fr.
– A place steeped in history
The site takes its name from the Manoir du Sol de Loire, referred to as the “Château du Sault de Loire” as early as 1667. The estate comprised two dwellings and several farm outbuildings dating from the 17thᵉ to 18thᵉ centuries, built of schist and tufa. There was a private chapel and an engraving of a Loire boat, a reminder of Montjean’s boating past.
In the XIXᵉ century, the estate was gradually transformed, and sand extraction activities came to reshape the landscape, until the creation of the current stretch of water – now converted into a natural haven for fishing and relaxation.
– Activities and discoveries around the lake
As well as fishing, the Sol de Loire offers an ideal setting for walks, wildlife watching, picnics and nature photography. Nearby, explore the Quai des Mariniers, its activities, restaurants and guinguette, the mining headframes, or take a boat trip to discover the Loire in a different way.
