Church of Saint Pierre aux Liens: why the name? The expression “Saint Pierre aux liens” refers to an episode in the life of the apostle Peter. He was arrested and imprisoned by King Herod. King Herod had had several members of Christ’s church arrested, and this was well regarded by the Jews. So he decided to arrest Peter again, the leader of this group who was rather unpopular with the Jews. The night before his appearance, the angel of the Lord was near Peter. He removed his chains and ordered him to put on his clothes and follow him. Then he miraculously led him out of prison. Chapter XII of the Book of the Acts of the Apostles recounts this miraculous deliverance of Peter. In memory of this divine intervention, Saint Peter is depicted with a broken chain. Each of the two pieces of the chain is attached to one of the Apostle’s hands. In the church in Frossay, we can see two representations of Saint Peter with his broken chain: one on the outside, on the façade, above the door, and the other inside, to the left of the altar. Mass: every Thursday at 9.30am, 2nd Sunday of each month at 9.30am, 4th Saturday of each month at 6.30pm.
