A landmark in the history of the Pays de Retz, the Château de Machecoul was listed as a Historic Monument in 1925 and has been the subject of archaeological excavations since 2008.
It is known as the main residence of Lord Gilles de Rais, companion of Joan of Arc.
Built in 1235 by the Duke of Brittany, the castle became the bastioned fortress of the Dukes of Retz in the 16th century.
This picturesque site on the River Falleron has been a key point for salt trading and water management between the Loire and the Ocean since Roman times.
