A PAINTING BY ANTON VAN DICK BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE
Who said heritage was small in the Mauges?! Here it is on a grand scale … It measures 3 m by 2 m 50….
The 2025 Heritage Days will have a special character at Chapelle Aubry. This year, you’ll be able to discover (or rediscover) the large painting that has been on display for years in the Chapelle church. This very large painting is a replica of a pupil of Rubens. It is called Le Calvaire, or Christ on the Cross, the Virgin Mary, Saint John and Saint Mary Magdalene, and has been hanging in the church at La Chapelle Aubry for at least 230 years.
On Sunday, Heritage Day 2026, starting at 2.30pm, you can take a guided tour of the history of this mysterious painting, which, with the help of the parish community, is about to be given a new lease of life.
In the first half of 2026, the frame will be removed and dismantled to be completely restored. Regional specialists in pictorial art, a cabinetmaker and a gilder specialising in gilded frames will be working on this majestic work. Perhaps some surprises hidden beneath the layer of grime will be revealed during the restoration…
Our local cabinet-maker Fabrice Leblanc will be taking part in this exceptional operation. After this very fine restoration, it will return to us to be re-exhibited in the same place and opened to visitors for the 2026 Heritage Days.
We look forward to seeing you all on Sunday 21 September for this exceptional heritage day!
