Clos Cristal

Antoine Cristal marked his era with a new and still unique idea: growing the vines between the walls. This achieves a balance between light and shade, resulting in unrivalled aromatic complexity and intensity. Over 3 km of walls have been erected on the estate, through which the vines have grown and flourished for 130 years. The base of the vine, planted on the north side of the wall, passes through a hole to allow the stock to grow through. The shoots, foliage and grapes grow along the south-facing wall. With their feet cool and their heads in the sun, the vines can gain up to a month in ripeness! This technique reflects the non-conformist vision of the Clos Cristal winegrowers, a vision that has endured from its creator to his most recent heirs. La Promenade d’Antoine : The Clos Cristal, a unique and magical place, opens its doors to you. You’ll be free to wander between the rows of vines and discover the life of Antoine Cristal, his growing methods, find out more about the Saumur Champigny appellation and admire images of the world’s impressive man-made vineyards. All you have to do is let yourself be carried away and follow the signs. Open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from April to October. The estate reserves the right to close access for work in the vineyards.
