Keys to the interior of the Saint-Sauveur chapel can be borrowed from the Saint-Florent-le-Vieil tourist office, OPEN ONLY FROM APRIL TO THE END OF SEPTEMBER. Built by the abbots of Saint-Florent at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, this funerary chapel is in the flamboyant Gothic style. Its facade, restored in the 19th century, retains very few of its original features, but is a reminder that it was built at a time of transition between Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Inside, there is an altar that appears to have been built at the same time as the building, as well as magnificent ribbed vaults. Initially, Jacques Cathelineau’s first grave lay at the foot of this chapel, and other veterans of the Vendée War are also buried in the cemetery, as are the ashes of Florentine author Julien Gracq.
